SPACESTARS
SPACESTARS is a spatial information education program that uses the same software, data, and methods as NASA , USGS and other high level analytical information and planning agencies to understand and solve locally based planning and environmental problems. The SPACESTARS lab enables teachers and students to define, design, implement, and assess school and community based problems using Geographic Information System tools and technology. Students are challenged to answer questions such as:
What factors contributed to our school location?
Will we need more classrooms or schools in 10 years?
What should our school do in a disaster situation?
Are we using the most efficient Bus Routes?
What inventory is in the school and where is it located?

STARS Geo AP
The National Spatial Technology And Remote Sensing Geospatial Apprenticeship Program (STARS Geo AP) Committee has established a standardized pathway for schools, individuals and employers, to train skilled Geospatial workers for geospatial jobs. We are basing the STARS Geo AP on the STARS certification currently being delivered through schools around the country.
We believe the most practical, well established, and sound method of preparing a national workforce of geospatial workers is through registered apprenticeship program. The apprenticeship program allows for training under actual job conditions supervised by skilled Geospatial workers. Using the STARS certification along with on the job training will create both a knowledgeable and experience geospatial worker. This strategy will benefit both the employee and the employer.
The Program Sponsor recognizes this need for continuous training to maintain the high level of competence demanded by this industry. Further, recognizing that the responsibility for training rests with those in industry who are the benefactors of a skilled workforce, the STARS Geo AP Committee, made up of industry leaders and employers has formulated and adopted these Apprenticeship Standards for the training of Apprentices in this industry.

Skills USA
SkillsUSA has partnered with the GIS industry to develop a competition program that will provide universities, colleges and their students with a way to validate their geospatial program and measure them against national standards. The partners include ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute), SPACESTARS, Leica GeoSystems GIS & Mapping, GITA (Geospatial Information & Technology Association) and others.
For more information and complete details and sponsor list or to register for this exciting event, visit: www.skillsusa.org/collegecontests.html or click the link below.
